Before deciding on a particular product however you need to first decide what the pump is to be used for. For example is it a pond filter pump that you require, or is the pump to be used for decorative purposes such as a fountain pump?

If you require a filter pump, to ensure that you select the right size you first need to know the size of your pond. Do this by multiplying the length x width x depth of the pond in metres and then multiply the result by a thousand. This will give you the volume of the pond in litres.

Once you have this figure you can then calculate the size of the fish pond pump that you require. If your fish pond is highly stocked you will, as a rule of thumb, need to circulate the water every hour and a half; for a low stocked pond, every two hours. So if for example you have a 10,000 litre, high stocked fish pond you will need a filter pump of between 6,500 to 7,000 litres per hour (LPH).
